When it comes to making your Weebly site look better and more professional, start with the small styling aspects such as font family, colors, etc. Don't be afraid to use less and try pairing different styles together to create a design that is completely you!
One of the biggest requests we get through our web design service is, "How can I make my Weebly site look better or more professional?"
There's no doubt that everyone who has a website wants it to look good and be appealing to the eye, but it's very important to remember that web design is, at its core, design, and design will always be subjective.
There's no objective design standard for web design, so this means you can design your website anyway you want and you can't be wrong in your expression.
Yes, there are trends in web design that come and (will) go, such as sliders, sections, white content areas with box shadows and grey backgrounds (i.e., Google), but not following the current web design trends doesn't mean your website's design can't stand out from the crowd and turn heads.
Since there are no objective design standards for web design, this means that there is nothing objective, or black and white, you could do to your site's design that will immediately make it that much more professional.
There are, however, things you can do to your website's design that can help you express the vision you have for your site, better, which in turn, could make it look more professional -- to the subjective eye. Some common elements to consider for bringing the design vision you have for your site to life can include, but aren't limited to:
Color - Consider using a color that best reflects what your site is selling, about, or conveying. Use more, or less of that color -- and maybe even consider giving it a complimentary color. Need help with this? Use a color wheel. Colors opposite of each other on the color wheel are complimentary and naturally go well with each other. Or be monochromatic and implement lighter or darker shades of one color. Or, you could be brazen and splatter paint your site with a bunch of colors, and who knows, you may find something of color you never dreamed of!
Font - One of the quickest ways to inject your vision into your website and make an immediate impression upon your visitors is with a font. The whole atmosphere of a site's design changes instantly with a new font. Weebly offers a great selection of fonts, but if you need one they don't offer, you can install one yourself (or we could do it for you).
Sizes, Spacing, and Margins - You may not think of sizing and spacing as being an important factor in your site's design, but don't be so quick to toss it out. You can make your site stand out by increasing or decreasing the size of specific text and images. Add letter spacing to text or increase the line height between each sentence. Maybe consider using all capital letters for your 'Title" element.
With web design, there are many elements to consider such as colors, font, size, background colors, layout, etc. And it's not just the elements to consider, but how they work off of each other and the vibe they all create when they work together.
In other words, just because one site can pull of a specific font and color well doesn't mean your site can. The reason? Well, that specific font and color may work well against the background they're using, which, you are not.
By creating different combination of styling elements, you create a site design that becomes not so much professional, but moreso uniquely you.
Being "professional looking" doesn't guarantee success with searching engine ranking, selling your product, your visitors' bounce rate, etc. There are sites with 10 and 15 year old designs that do really well, and then there are sites that look amazing and modern, but just can't seem to reach the limelight.
In the end, when you're done crafting your web piece, what truly matters is that you have created something that you can be proud of, and it accurately conveys and articulates your message in the best manner possible. Of course, SEO matters, but that's a completely different animal.
